Is using this in a real interview cheating?
PrepWhisper is built for practice — mock interviews, prep sessions, and any setting where assistance is welcome. Using undisclosed AI help in a live interview breaches most companies' hiring processes, and we don't build for it: coaching is silent and on-screen because it belongs in the room where you're rehearsing, not the one where you're being assessed. The point isn't to have the coach in the interview. It's to have already heard yourself answer.
Where does my audio go?
Never to PrepWhisper's servers by default — your browser's built-in speech engine transcribes it (in Chrome/Edge that engine may use the browser vendor's speech service, under their policy) and only the resulting text reaches us. The optional high-accuracy mode streams audio through PrepWhisper to Deepgram for the session, unrecorded. Either way we never record or store audio — see the privacy policy.
Does the app make any sound?
Coaching is silent by design — every cue is visual: the “Just asked” banner, the live status dots, and the streaming guidance text. It never speaks or beeps over a real conversation. The one exception is Mock Interview mode, where the AI interviewer reads its questions aloud so you can practice against a voice; that's the only audio PrepWhisper ever produces, and only when you start a mock.
Which browsers work?
All of them, but not in the same way. Chrome and Edge (any Chromium browser) support the Web Speech API, so transcription happens in the browser and your audio never reaches us — that's the default, and the private one. Firefox and Safari have no Web Speech support, so they use high-accuracy mode instead, which streams audio through us for the session without recording it. Either way you need an internet connection: even Chrome's recognition runs online.
The transcript is empty — what's wrong?
Watch the mic level meter next to the status pill. If it doesn't move while you talk, your browser is listening to the wrong input device: check the mic selected in your browser's site settings and your OS sound input. If the meter moves but no text appears, check your internet connection.
How does it pick up the interviewer's voice in a mock interview?
Your microphone hears both sides if you're in the same room or on speaker. For remote mocks over headphones, either switch to speakers or route system audio into the mic input. A quiet room and a decent mic noticeably improve transcript quality.
What do I need to use it?
A Chrome or Edge browser, a microphone, and a free account — that's it. Nothing to install. Sign in with email, Google, or Microsoft and you're practicing in under a minute.

What languages does it support?
Transcription follows your browser's language setting, and the coaching responds in kind. Quality is best in English, but Chrome's speech recognition supports dozens of languages.
